A photo of your face is biometric data. It can be used to train facial-recognition models, build deepfakes, or simply be sold to data brokers. Most photo apps bury permission to do exactly this in their terms of service — often with a clause granting them 'a worldwide, royalty-free license' to your images.
You wouldn't hand a stranger the key to your house; uploading an unedited, high-resolution selfie to an unknown server is closer to that than most people realize.
How cloud apps handle your images
The typical flow: you upload a photo, the app sends it to a server, a GPU processes it, and the result comes back. Along the way, the image may be logged, cached, used to improve the model, or shared with third parties — often without meaningful consent.
Cloud processing also means the vendor decides your data's fate: a privacy policy change, a data breach, or a company sale can all change what happens to your images after you hit upload.
How local processing works
Local processing flips the architecture. Your browser reads the image from your own disk, the JavaScript on the page performs every pixel operation on your CPU, and the result is rendered straight back — nothing ever leaves your device.
Modern browsers are fast enough that edge detection, blur, triangulation and color mapping all run in a few seconds on a phone or laptop. There's no server cost, no queue, no upload progress bar, and no 'we store your photos for 30 days' fine print.
The privacy promise of local processing is absolute and structural: there is no server to hack, no database to leak, no log to subpoena.
What to look for in a private tool
- No upload endpoint. If the tool can work offline, your image never leaves the device.
- No account required. Accounts exist to collect data — their absence is a feature.
- No watermark paywall. Watermarks are how 'free' tools monetize your work; a genuinely free tool doesn't need them.
- Clear policy. A privacy policy that explicitly says images are not transmitted or stored is a good sign.

What happens on your device
When you process a photo locally, the image is read into memory, the effect runs, and the result is rendered — then the original is released when the page closes or you clear the tab. Nothing is written to a server log, no thumbnail is cached in a CDN, no analytics sees your pixels. Even the generated download stays on your device unless you move it.
The only persistent data is your language choice and favorite tools, stored in localStorage — a browser-level feature that never leaves your machine.
Local vs desktop software
Desktop editors are private too — but they cost hundreds of dollars, live on one machine, and need updates. Local web tools give you desktop-grade privacy with zero install, plus the convenience of any device: open a browser, process, close. For power users, the trade-off is advanced features (layers, masks) that still need a full editor — but for the 90% of photo-effect use cases, local web processing is the right-sized tool.
The full checklist
Before trusting any photo tool: 1) can it work offline? 2) does the privacy policy explicitly promise no upload and no storage? 3) is there an account wall? 4) does the free tier watermark? 5) are the terms short enough to read? A 'yes' to 1 and 2, and 'no' to 3, 4 and 5 is the pattern of a genuinely private tool. Hold every app — including ours — to this test.

Is localStorage a privacy risk? No. localStorage is a browser feature that stores small strings on your own device. It never transmits anything, and you can clear it anytime. Only your language choice and bookmarked tools are stored — never your photos.
What if someone uses my device? Your bookmarks and language preference are visible to anyone using the same browser profile, but your photos are not stored anywhere — processed images vanish when the tab closes unless you download them.
Does local processing work on all devices? Any modern browser on any device — phone, tablet, laptop, desktop. Very old browsers may lack Canvas features; in that case update the browser. No installation is ever required.
Why do other tools upload then? Mostly business reasons: cloud processing lets vendors monetize, train models, or bundle features into subscriptions. Local processing gives away less control to the vendor and more privacy to you — which is exactly why we built it this way.
